Dr.
Jacqueline Walters realized early on that
the field of OB/GYN had paid little attention
to the population it was meant to serve
— women. As a gynecologist in training,
she was concerned with what she considered
to be a lack of personal care and consideration
for the gynecology patient. This was partially
due to the fact that, until quite recently,
the majority of the OB/GYN’s serving
women were men. Dr. Walters, a graduate
of the University Of Mississippi School
Of Medicine, past OB/GYN Chief Resident
of the Medical Center of Central Georgia,
and a partner in Castillo Walters, an OB/GYN
practice based in Atlanta, GA, thought there
was a better way.
Says Dr. Walters, “I’ve found
that many woman accept an uncomfortable
gynecological exam as the status quo. They
don’t question it because that’s
what they’re used to.” Dr. Walters
envisioned a shift away from a “physician
focused practice” to a “patient
focused practice”.
In 1994, during her second year of training
at the Medical Center of Central Georgia,
she discussed her ideas with Dr. Gerry Feuer.
Nine years later, as the leader of a major
gynecology practice in Atlanta, she was
ready to do something about it. Dr. Walters,
her business partner Dr. Katia Castillo,
and Dr. Feuer agreed that that it would
make sense to form a company and create
medical products around the concept of “patient’s
first.” In 2004 they joined to do
so.
One year later, the company’s first
product FemSpec™, a soft, compliant,
inflatable specula, is about to arrive on
the market. “It’s really amazing,”
says Dr. Walters. “If men had to endure
the discomfort of cold, hard specula during
a twice yearly check-up, an alternative
would have been found decades ago. As a
woman and a patient, I appreciate FernSpec’s
comfort. As a physician, I appreciate that
FemSpec’s unique design and characteristics
encourage more relaxed and comfortable patients,
which ultimately allow me to achieve better
results. Everyone wins.”
Dr. Walters resides with her husband and
child in Atlanta, Georgia.
